Kavya’s Story: A Journey from Rejection to Inclusion

Kavya’s Story: A Journey from Rejection to Inclusion
A moment from our learning programmes.

Kavya lost her mother at a very young age. To fill that void, her father remarried. Unfortunately, her stepmother was abusive, beating her with belts or hanging her upside down. These traumatic experiences shaped Kavya into a defensive and aggressive child. She often used abusive language and violent behavior to protect herself.

As a result, her classmates avoided her and sometimes even bullied her. She had received several warnings from the school principal due to her disruptive behavior—even during computer literacy classes. One teacher even suggested removing her from the computer class entirely.

But Kavya always smiled and spoke kindly to me. She never complained and was genuinely excited to learn computers. I knew she deserved to stay.

One day, after yet another fight, I took a different approach. I told the class no one would be allowed to use the computer unless they made sure Kavya could learn too. I shared her life story and asked who would voluntarily include her in their group. They look some time to discuss and to my surprise, many girls raised their hands.

Since that day, such incidents never happened again—at least not in our computer and robotics class. But to make her part of the computer class, many times I had to ensure that class shows compassion to Kavya and Kavya does the same to the class.
